What rolling fire-door work can you request?

This page is limited to rolling fire doors, including coiling assemblies at rated openings. It is not a generic inspection offer and does not imply that every provider works on every manufacturer, release system, or fire-door configuration.

A request may concern annual inspection and testing, a drop test, documentation requested by the local fire authority, repair after an unsuccessful test, or reset after an actual or test release. A capable provider may evaluate the curtain, guides, bottom bar, hood, counterbalance and governor components, fusible links, release devices, operator interfaces, and attachments. Those are inspection categories, not a diagnosis and not a procedure.

NFPA 80 addresses the installation and maintenance of assemblies that protect openings against fire and smoke. NFPA 80 The Florida Fire Prevention Code is adopted by the State Fire Marshal and enforced by the local fire official, with local amendments potentially applying. Florida Fire Prevention Code Annual inspection and testing per NFPA 80 as adopted, including the applicable drop test, must therefore be discussed separately from the local authority having jurisdiction's acceptance requirements.

The provider performs the inspection, testing, repair, and reset work it agrees to handle. This publisher does not test, certify, label, or approve a fire door. The local fire authority, or AHJ, determines what it will accept and what documentation the facility must provide.

If the assembly has no fire label or the door type is uncertain, report that rather than guessing. A non-fire-rated coiling service door belongs on the rolling steel door repair page.

What observations should you report?

Do not operate the door again simply to reproduce a symptom. Report what facility personnel already observed from a safe position.

What you observed What a capable provider may evaluate Useful call detail
An inspection notice asks for a drop test Door identification, release arrangement, prior records, test scope, and requested documentation The notice wording, due date, AHJ contact, door location, and label information
The door did not close during a test Curtain travel, guides, bottom bar, governor, release devices, and related assembly condition Who performed the test, when it occurred, and the written result
The door released and now needs attention Door condition, release event, reset requirements, and whether repair is needed before another test Whether this followed a test or an actual event; do not attempt a reset
A fusible link or release component appears missing or damaged Fusible links, release devices, connections, and compatibility with the identified assembly Existing photographs and prior service records
The curtain is crooked, jammed, or damaged Curtain, guides, bottom bar, barrel/counterbalance area, hood, and attachments Last known movement and any known impact
The operator works but the release sequence did not Operator and release interfaces applicable to that door Any displayed indicator and the test report
Documentation cannot be located Existing labels, earlier reports, repair history, and AHJ request Facility name, exact opening, and records already searched

The provider decides what can be assessed or completed based on the installed assembly and the requested documentation. Availability of a provider with suitable fire-door capability is not guaranteed.

Is this a test, a repair, or both?

A service request should separate four items: inspection, operational testing, corrective repair, and documentation. A scheduled test does not establish that the door will pass. A repair does not by itself establish acceptance by the AHJ. A reset after a release is also not the same as completing an accepted annual inspection and test.

Ask the provider to state:

  1. which identified doors are included;
  2. whether the scope includes inspection, drop testing, reset, or repair;
  3. whether return testing after corrective work is included;
  4. what report or door-by-door record will be supplied;
  5. what information the provider needs from the AHJ; and
  6. which exclusions require separate building, electrical, alarm, or fire-protection coordination.

Retain the provider's inspection and testing documentation with the facility's fire-door records. Confirm the format and submission expectations with the local fire authority before assuming a provider's standard report will be accepted. The fire-door section of the resources hub identifies the official sources behind these distinctions.

When does repair become a larger scope?

The observed problem may be confined to a component, or it may affect the compatibility and operation of the assembly. The provider must assess whether a fusible link, release device, governor-related component, slat, guide, bottom bar, operator interface, or other item can be addressed within the existing assembly.

Replacement deserves a separate proposal when the provider concludes the existing door or opening cannot support the required repair scope. Ask whether the proposal preserves the rated assembly, what product and installation documents apply, whether opening preparation is included, and which party coordinates with the AHJ and building department. This website cannot approve a substitute component or determine that an altered assembly retains its rating.

For a complete replacement, see commercial dock door installation and replacement. For non-fire service-door damage, use rolling steel door repair.

What affects the provider's proposed scope?

This site does not publish test or repair prices. Ask the receiving provider to identify any assessment charge and to define the number of openings, test and documentation deliverables, repair authorization process, parts, access equipment, work window, and return visit in its proposal.

Useful scope factors include the door manufacturer and model, opening dimensions from existing records, label information, release-device arrangement, prior drop-test reports, known deficiencies, access above the hood, coordination requirements, and whether production must stop around the opening. Parts availability and site access can also affect the sequence, but the provider confirms timing and pricing directly.

Do not accept an unexplained statement that a door is “certified.” Ask what work was performed, what result was recorded, who produced the document, and whether the AHJ has additional requirements.

What should you have ready when you call?

Have the commercial facility's exact address, door or opening number, manufacturer and model if already recorded, fire-label information if safely visible, and the number of doors in the request. Include the AHJ notice, prior test reports, service history, known release event, and any safely taken photographs.

Also identify the on-site contact, access or badging rules, production shutdown window, alarm or fire-protection contact if coordination is expected, and the person authorized to approve corrective work. Do not climb, open a hood, move a damaged curtain, or operate the door to collect missing information.

Requests are considered in Lakeland and nearby Polk County communities; exact address coverage is confirmed on the call. See the service area before planning around provider availability.

If a door or dock position is unsafe right now

If equipment is damaged or behaving unexpectedly, stop using the affected door or dock position and notify the facility's responsible safety personnel. Keep people clear and follow the facility's established isolation procedures. Do not force movement, release stored energy, enter a pit, or bypass safety devices. The responsible personnel and qualified provider determine the safe next step.

This request website is not an emergency service. For an immediate threat to life, use emergency services rather than waiting for a provider match.

The commercial services guide separates fire-door work from standard rolling steel repair, overhead sectional doors, high-speed doors, and installation. The Lakeland loading dock repair homepage explains how phone routing works across all equipment categories.
